Extraordinary scenes show suburban streets transformed into raging rivers as heroic everyday Aussies came to the rescue.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the past four days had been “extremely wet” for NSW, with between 40 and 80mm forecast in just three to six hours over Thursday night and more rain to come.
Up to 122mm fell at Lidcombe, 109mm in six hours to 9.45pm, while the city recorded 83mm. Meteorologists described the system as compact but powerful, smashing some suburbs while sparing others.
There were 42 urgent rescues across Sydney overnight into Friday, with more than 250 New South Wales State Emergency Service personnel responding to almost 500 calls for assistance in 24 hours.
