Enthusiasts celebrate 80 years of Vespa
Fans of the Vespa — the iconic Italian two-wheeler made famous in films like Roman Holiday and Zoolander 2 — have gathered to celebrate its 80th birthday in Melbourne.
As the cost of fuel continues to rise, lovers of the scooter (Vespa means wasp in Italian) say it’s as relevant as ever.
“Back in the sixties, there was a petrol crisis, and it encouraged a lot of people to purchase a Vespa,” Vespa Club Australia president Julie Pond told SBS News.
She says that, because of the current political and economic climate, people “are actually doing the same thing” today.
“Vespa is the ultimate choice of transport at the moment,” she said.
