Emotional scenes as Israelis and Palestinians reunite with loved ones
Deeply emotional reunions have unfolded as thousands gathered to welcome the Israelis and Palestinians who were released under the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas after two years of devastating war.
Under a US-brokered ceasefire deal, all 20 living hostages, as well as the remains of 28 deceased hostages, were returned to Israel by Hamas following two years of captivity and Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
The hostages were set free in exchange for the release of about 1,700 Palestinians detained without charge under “administrative detention” policies by the Israeli army in Gaza during the war, and around 250 Palestinian prisoners, including some convicted by Israeli courts for killing Israelis.
