Indonesian police have arrested 72 people on suspicion of arson as massive fires spread in central and western parts of Indonesia.

The dense smoke is also blanketing some of Indonesia’s neighbours.

The fires are being driven by farmers and plantation owners for land clearing but the situation is being exacerbated by an intensifying El Nino weather pattern.

Dr Karmele Llano Sanchez, CEO of Natural Rehabilitation Initiative Indonesia spoke to The World’s Girish Sawlani about the impacts of the fires on local communities and wildlife habitats.
