Ed Sheeran has opened a solo concert in Philadelphia with comments about Gaza, saying the situation is “catastrophic and unjustifiable”, following a wave of criticism that he had failed to back his opening act’s pro-Palestinian comments.

Rapper Macklemore was dropped from the Loop Tour after owners of stadiums hosting upcoming shows objected to his pro-Palestinian comments on stage, prompting other supporting acts to quit.

Speaking at the Philadelphia concert, Sheeran said he wants his music and shows to be about unity and humanity, not politics.

“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry,” he said.

Pro-Palestinian protesters had gathered outside the Philadelphia stadium where Sheeran is performing.

Speaking to the ABC outside the Lincoln Financial Field, protest organiser Adi Chattopadhyay said “there is a right and wrong side of history and [Sheeran’s] on the wrong one”.

Some of the fans streaming into the stadium said they had hesitated about coming due to the controversy, but ultimately decided to attend and enjoy the music.

Since Israel invaded Gaza in October 2023, following the worst attack on the country in its history by militant group Hamas, the toll on Palestinians and the wider issue of Palestinian rights have emerged as a rallying cry in the entertainment industry.

The massive Israeli offensive in Gaza has killed more than 73,800 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.
