Death of Russian plague researcher has US and EU on alert
US and European Union officials say they are closely monitoring the case of a lab worker who died at what Russia called a plague research institute.
While the cause of death is still unknown, it’s prompted the head of Russia’s health watchdog to fly to Irkutsk in Siberia.
Other countries in the region including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have also reportedly put safeguard measures in place.
Human plague is still endemic across large parts of the world, but World Health Organization says that, based on current information, the overall risk to general public health is low.
