There are fears the deadly H5 strain of bird flu has reached one of Australia’s sub-Antarctic islands for the first time. Scientists on Heard Island observed symptoms consistent with the deadly disease, including unusual levels of mortality in elephant seals. Scientists did not observe signs of the bird flu in other species, including penguins and other seabirds.
