Cruise passengers evicted from ship in Cambodia as operator crippled by fuel costs

More than 200 luxury cruise passengers—many of whom sold their homes and life savings to live permanently at sea—have been kicked off the Villa Vie Odyssey and left stranded in the port city of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The multi-year continuous voyage abruptly ground to a halt after U.S.-based operator Villa Vie Residences announced it had run out of funds to buy fuel. Soaring geopolitical tensions and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz caused monthly fuel expenses per cabin to skyrocket from an average of $1,800 to as high as $8,000, creating an unsustainable cash burn. Residents, mostly retirees and digital nomads from the U.S. and Australia, were told to pack their belongings and find their own way home, leaving dozens facing sudden homelessness in a city notorious for human trafficking and industrial-scale scam compounds.
