Contaminated illicit alcohol found in bottle shops | 7NEWS
Illicit alcohol containing methanol and dangerous plasticizers is being sold at licensed bottle shops across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. A new study by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre found contaminated products in 30% of over 200 bottle shops tested, with one bottle containing methanol at 10 times the allowable Australian limit. The investigation reveals a regulatory gap where bottle shop owners are not required to verify their suppliers are licensed, potentially exposing consumers to health risks including organ damage, seizures and cancer.
