Comedians criticised for attending Riyadh Comedy Festival
A Saudi Arabian comedy festival has attracted criticism from human rights groups and members of the international community for “whitewashing” the country’s human rights record.
The Riyadh Comedy Festival, running from 26 September to 9 October, features international stars, including comedians Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, Bill Burr, Jimmy Carr, Louis CK, and Jack Whitehall.
But both the festival and its performers have faced criticism in recent weeks over Saudi Arabia’s alleged human rights record, including restrictions on free speech, executions of political dissidents and discrimination against women.
