‘Climate change does not recognise borders’: Nepal PM warns after deadly floods
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah warned world leaders from the UN stage about climate inaction, saying climate change “doesn’t recognise borders” and that countries that contribute more to “the problem” must do more.
“Nepal contributes less than 0.1 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions … we did not create this crisis, yet we are paying a colossal price for it,” he said.
Scientists have linked global warming to the disaster on the Nepal-Tibet border, saying rising temperatures are changing glaciers, snow and permafrost in ways that can make some high-altitude slopes increasingly unstable and increase the risk of catastrophic collapses, landslides and floods.
The devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border have killed at least 1,4000 people, left thousands missing and wiped out entire towns as survivors remain in need of basic amenities like clean drinking water and medical supplies.
“Climate Justice cannot just remain a beautiful phrase in a United Nations document … people of our country (should) be allowed to build their future instead of constantly rebuilding their past,” Shah told the UN General Assembly.
