Budget 2026: Treasurer Jim Chalmers on recession fears, $250 tax offset and skilled migration | SBS

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he’s not anticipating a recession if the war in the Middle East continues, but says the conflict is a big influence on the 2026-2027 budget.

Speaking with SBS Chief Political Correspondent Anna Henderson, Chalmers says the first priority of the budget is to help Australians through a difficult period.

Chalmers says that help is being provided through cost of living relief through changes to the tax system, including a $250 tax offset for Australian workers which will come into effect mid-way through 2028.
