Borneo’s last orangutans under threat from severe wildfires
The island of Borneo is home to more than 80 per cent of the world’s remaining orangutans.
But decades of land clearing for agriculture, logging and mining have destroyed vast swathes of their forests and left them critically endangered.
Now severe wildfires fuelled by a severe and strengthening El Niño are putting even more of their habitat in danger of destruction.
SBS International Correspondent Claudia Farhart visited the Sebangau National Park in Central Kalimantan – where a team of researchers dedicate their days and nights to protecting the great apes.
