Bonmatí says the Ballon d’Or ‘helps women’s football a lot’

FC Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí says “we’re getting closer to equality” after winning the women’s Ballon d’Or, which honours the player deemed to have performed the best over the 2024-2025 season.

The Ballon d’Or has been awarded to men since 1956 but the women’s award was only introduced in 2018.

Winning the award for a third year in a row, the 27-year-old Spanish player said the award ceremony “helps women’s football a lot”.

“This evening might be the biggest showcase in world football and I think it helps that it’s fighting for equality and teaching that to everyone,” she said.
