Bolsonaro refuses to concede Brazil election defeat
Right-wing Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, commonly called Lula, was voted in for a fourth term.
Bolsonaro said a ruling by a Brazilian Supreme Court justice to extend voting by two hours should have resulted in the elections being “annulled”.
”It is impossible to understand the election results in context — given when these events took place. We will take legal action. I will request that these elections be annulled,” Bolsonaro said.
The ruling followed a request from Lula’s campaign, which said authorities in several cities were restricting voters’ access to public transport.
Many voters rely on public transport to vote in cities where they are registered, but don’t live.
Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, won the first round of voting.
Lula’s win in the run-off marks the first time a candidate has won after trailing in the first round.
