Former Bishop of Broome Christopher Saunders, 76, appeared in court for his sentencing hearing after being convicted on 13 sex crimes including rape against two Aboriginal male victims 40 years his junior. Covert police surveillance footage captured Saunders engaging in sexual activity with a young Aboriginal male, evidence that proved critical to his conviction following a four-year investigation. The prosecution argued he abused his power as a Catholic bishop, whilst his defence claimed he was providing pastoral care, a suggestion the judge rejected as grooming behaviour.
