Australia’s second biggest energy provider is investigating a potential hack | The Business

Origin Energy says an investigation has been launched into a potential hacking incident with reports two million customers could have been affected.
The company has 4.8 million customers.
The nation’s second largest energy retailer says it doesn’t believe that any credit card or bank details have been accessed.
The cyber attack is the latest for major companies in Australia, with Qantas, Optus and Medibank all suffering mass breaches.
Earlier, The Australian reported receiving a sample of customer records containing names, addresses, emails, and phone numbers. The news outlet says it then alerted Origin.
The ABC has also been approached by someone claiming to be the hacker. It is unclear what they are demanding. We couldn’t corroborate the message but it said they’ve begun a countdown.
Origin has notified authorities including the Australian Federal Police.
Origin Energy’s shares fell 2.5 per cent on the announcement.
