Australia’s only silicon manufacturer to exit US after extra 40% tariff | The Business | ABC NEWS

Australia’s only silicon manufacturing company, Simcoa, has hit back at Trump’s tariffs after being forced to end its US operations. The company is winding up its American business after being slapped with an additional 40% tariff on imports into the United States.

The Albanese government has labelled the extra tariff unjustified, inconsistent with free trade and called for its removal. Simcoa’s vice president, David Miles says the tariffs effectively exclude the company from America from August 14.

The US International Trade Commission has claimed Simcoa is selling its product at less than fair value. Mr Miles responded, calling the claim “absolutely rubbish”, and has questioned the worth of Australia’s critical minerals agreement with the US.

“It seems to me that the Americans want to cherry pick that particular agreement,” he says.

For now, Mr Miles says the company will look towards South East Asia and India, and maintain operations in Europe.

“Fortunately, there are some opportunities because the world desperately needs to move away from China as the only supplier of solar panels,” he says.

“So I just have to hope we can hang on long enough for those opportunities to emerge.”
