Australia’s first mammal bird flu case confirmed | 7NEWS
A long-nosed fur seal found dead in South Australia has become Australia’s first confirmed case of bird flu in a mammal, raising concerns for endangered Australian sea lions. Authorities are racing to protect vulnerable species, with approximately 1,000 little penguins on Phillip Island, Victoria, being vaccinated using a poultry vaccine in a trial program. With around 300 bird flu cases recorded nationally and more expected, the virus’s spread to mammals marks a significant escalation.
