Australia recognises Palestinian state but Netanyahu says ‘it’s not going to happen’
Australia has formally recognised Palestine as a sovereign state, a historic shift in decades of Middle East foreign policy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong called it a crucial step towards a two-state solution, while the Opposition dismissed it as “symbolism over substance”.
The move, mirrored by Canada and the UK ahead of the UN General Assembly, drew criticism from the US as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the leaders of these countries are “rewarding terror”. He said: “And I have another message for you: It’s not going to happen.”
Meanwhile, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN hailed it as “a huge investment in peace”.
