A looming deadline has triggered fears of a “new Y2K”, with an expert urging Aussie companies to act soon before it’s too late.
The deadline for an ominous technological breakthrough known as “Q-day” has crept forward to 2029, with Aussie companies urged to shield themselves from quantum computers.
Last month, Google set out a deadline for when it believes the security community should complete its shift to a post-quantum era, warning that the technology poses a “significant threat to current cryptographic standards, particularly encryption and digital signatures”.
The company is well placed to comment on the issue, given it both develops quantum hardware and operates internet infrastructure that could be at risk from the technology.
Virtually the entire internet depends on cryptography for security.
Most online activity is protected by mathematical “locks” called encryption, which prevent attackers from accessing your passwords, financial details, messages and digital identity.
