It’s tax time again. With many Australians starting to pull together their 2025-26 tax returns, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning people to stop claiming private expenses as work deductions, and to also stop under-declaring income. Some have been trying to pass off baby expenses, personal gifts and meal deliveries as ‘work-related’. And many are failing to declare gifts and income on their returns. The ATO uses a suite of tools – including data matching, analytics and artificial intelligence – to understand taxpayer behaviour and identify red flags. ATO assistant commissioner Anita Challen goes through the do’s and don’ts of claiming, with ABC business reporter Nassim Khadem.
