ASX jumps to five-week high, Reserve Bank posts $11.3 billion loss | Finance Report | ABC NEWS
The Australian share market has jumped to its highest level since early September. The ASX received a boost from yesterday’s worse-than-expected jobs figures, as markets are now betting there is a 1-in-5 chance of an interest rate hike in November. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank posted an $11.3 billion loss during the 2025-26 financial year, according to its latest annual report. It’s the RBA’s second-largest loss on record, largely due to an $8.5 billion accounting loss. Essentially, the stronger Australian dollar and rise in global interest rates have reduced the value of all the government’s bonds it bought during the COVID-19 pandemic, in a bid to prop up the economy.
