NASA’s newest $4 billion flagship astrophysics observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Bound for Lagrange Point 2—one million miles from Earth—Roman features a wide-angle field of view 100 times larger than Hubble’s and a scan rate over 1,000 times faster. Equipped with a revolutionary coronagraph, the observatory will map over two billion galaxies to study dark energy while searching for up to 100,000 new exoplanets in pursuit of “Earth 2.0”. During a post-launch briefing, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman received a surprise live phone call from President Donald Trump, who congratulated the team on the successful mission. First high-resolution images are expected before the winter holidays.
