Albanese announces $60m funding boost for Ukraine
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia will provide Ukraine with an additional $60 million to support its war against Russia.
The announcement came during an emotional meeting between Albanese and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The prime minister referred to his Ukrainian counterpart as his “friend” before the two leaders shared a hug.
Albanese said the people of Ukraine are “inspiring the world” with their “commitment to defend their sovereign nation” against Russian aggression.
The two leaders signed a 10-year bilateral agreement, which will see Australia provide an extra $45 million in military equipment for Ukraine.
The remaining $15 million will go toward Ukrainian energy support and humanitarian assistance.
Zelenskyy thanked Albanese for his support and said the package is the “strongest document” the two countries had ever signed together.
