Bear stranded after climbing up power pole on New Mexico highway

Travelers encountered an unusual sight while driving through New Mexico on Monday, July 20, after a bear scaled a power pole and sat among electrical wires at the top.

Shannon Mullens told Storyful she was driving along Highway 56 from Red River, New Mexico, to Oklahoma when she spotted the bear.

“We really didn’t believe what we saw at first, so we turned around to get another look,” Mullens said. “At first, we thought that the bear was dead, until we got closer to it and then we realized that he was still alive.”

Mullens said she and her fellow traveler called 911 and were told to leave the bear alone because there was nothing authorities could do but let the bear come down on its own.
