‘Needs to be addressed’: Higher rates of mental illness ‘overlapping’ with political violence
Writer and broadcaster Esther Krakue believes there is a “greater preponderance” of mental illness “overlapping” with political violence.
“I think what I’ve noticed…is that while there are hate figures, of course, on both the left and right, there seems to be a greater preponderance of mental illness as well,” Ms Krakue told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“That seems to overlap with hateful figures on the left that think any means is justified to try and get rid of their political opponents.
“I don’t think you just see that level of mental illness on the right or right-wing hate figures in the same way.
“I think that needs to be addressed.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a coincidence that people who hold the kind of extreme views that they do, with regard to thinking that anyone who has a differing view is basically some form of Nazi.
“I don’t think it’s surprising that they think that they’re then justified in killing what they would see as a Nazi.
”There are right-wing hate figures, but I think they’re probably called out by the right in a very significant way.
“I don’t think the same can be argued for many on the left.”
