How one retailer’s victory could change the way you shop


Do you feel like you’re always being watched while you’re shopping? Well, you probably are.

Five years after Bunnings stopped using facial recognition in their stores, a recent legal win has them planning to bring it back.

“We don’t have confirmed timelines at this stage; however we look forward to working with government, industry and the union to roll this out as quickly as possible,” a Bunnings spokesperson told SBS.

Digital rights advocates are concerned the move will support the growth of facial recognition technology in Australia, despite a lacking privacy legislation framework.

The Albanese government released its response to the Privacy Act review in 2023, promising to introduce further reforms after the 2025 federal election, includinga “fair and reasonable test”.

But almost one year on from the election, these reforms have not been delivered.
