NT Police release footage of looting in Alice Springs | ABC NEWS
Northern Territory Police have arrested 11 people in relation to the alleged “looting” of businesses caught up in unrest in Alice Springs last week following the arrest of Jefferson Lewis for the murder of a five-year-old girl.
The child, referred to since her death as Kumanjayi Little Baby for cultural reasons, went missing from an Aboriginal town camp on April 25.
Police arrested a badly beaten Mr Lewis on Thursday and took him to the Alice Springs Hospital for treatment where hundreds of rioters gathered outside seeking traditional “payback”.
NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole said, despite some of those present on Thursday night claiming to be seeking “payback”, the footage showed alleged criminal acts rather than any traditional Indigenous practices.
In releasing the CCTV footage, Commissioner Dole said he was appealing for members of the public who knew anyone in it to come forward.
