A new alliance of armed ethnic groups is taking shape in Myanmar. Known as the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF), it brings together groups like the Karen National union and the Kachin Independence Organisation as well as the ousted National Unity Government. But can it mount a serious challenge against a junta that’s backed by China? Sean Turnell once served as Aung San Suu Kyi’s economic advisor before being imprisoned for nearly two years after the 2021 coup and he has been assisting this new alliance in an advisory capacity. He told The World’s Girish Sawlani the new alliance is hugely significant.
