Eight children killed in family violence mass shooting
Police in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the United States, say eight children aged between one and 12 were murdered in a family violence-related mass shooting. Police say the perpetrator was the father of seven of the children.
The gunman also shot the children’s mother and another woman, who are both in a critical condition.
Police say the gunman was killed during a chase after he hijacked a car while fleeing one of three crime scenes.
It is the deadliest mass shooting in the US in two years.
Nonprofit organisation the Gun Violence Archive has documented 119 mass shootings this year, not including Shreveport.
Shreveport City Councillor Grayson Boucher says more than 30 per cent of murders in the city are connected to domestic violence.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux announced that his office is supporting the establishment of a comprehensive domestic violence centre.
