A Starlink satellite re-entered the atmosphere over Victoria, creating a bright spectacle in the early morning sky that was witnessed and filmed by thousands of people. Associate Professor Michael Brown from Monash University confirmed the phenomenon was space junk rather than a meteor, identifiable by its slow, horizontal movement. The incident coincides with concerns about a proposal to launch up to one million satellites for AI data centre operations, which could make such re-entries extremely common and significantly alter the night sky.
