The mastermind of a vast Ponzi scheme in China, which conned nearly 130,000 investors, was jailed in Britain on Tuesday for over 11 years for laundering the proceeds of the fraud into cryptocurrency now worth billions of dollars. Fiona Jones reports.
This is the shocking moment Chinese “Bitcoin Queen” Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, was arrested in bed inside her luxury North London mansion — ending one of the largest cryptocurrency scams in history. The 47-year-old fraudster masterminded a record-breaking £5.5 billion ($A11 billion) Ponzi scheme that defrauded more than 128,000 victims in China between 2014 and 2017.
After siphoning billions through her fake company Lantian Gerui, which promised sky-high returns on investments, Qian converted the stolen funds into Bitcoin and fled China when authorities began closing in. Posing as a successful jewellery entrepreneur, she set up a lavish new life in the UK, renting a £17,333 ($A35,000)-a-month mansion in Hampstead, splurging on designer jewellery, and travelling across Europe with her accomplices.
Police say Qian’s criminal network helped her evade capture for years. She reportedly spent over £119,000 ($A240,000) on two watches in Zurich and even attempted to buy a £12.5 million ($A25 million) property in London before suspicions over her digital wealth triggered a UK investigation. When officers raided her home in 2018, they found her in bed claiming to be injured and using a fake name. Investigators seized laptops loaded with millions in Bitcoin — but the full scale of her fortune was still unknown.
Following the initial raid, Qian fled again, vanishing for six years. Detectives tracked her digital trail through cryptocurrency transfers and accomplices’ activities, ultimately tracing her to an address in York in April 2024. Footage released by the Metropolitan Police shows the dramatic moment officers found her lying in bed once more — the second time the crypto queen had been caught that way.
When police examined her seized devices, they discovered a cryptocurrency wallet holding £27.3 million ($A55 million) in Bitcoin, part of the staggering £5.5 billion total linked to her laundering operation. Qian’s accomplices — including Jian Wen and Seng Hok Ling — were also convicted for their roles in concealing the funds, renting properties, and helping her remain undetected.
In September 2024, Qian pleaded guilty to acquiring and possessing criminal property and was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court to 11 years in prison. Wen received six years and eight months, while Ling was jailed for four years and 11 months.
According to Will Lyne, Head of the Met’s Economic and Cybercrime Command, the case represents “one of the largest and most complex economic crime investigations ever undertaken.” Working alongside the Crown Prosecution Service, National Crime Agency, and Chinese law enforcement, the Met’s cyber teams meticulously tracked Qian’s Bitcoin transactions — proving that even in the murky world of digital finance, every crypto trail leaves a trace.
Qian’s story has become a cautionary tale for the global crypto community — exposing how organised crime networks exploit digital currencies to launder billions, yet remain vulnerable to forensic blockchain analysis.
As the “Bitcoin Queen” begins her 11-year sentence, police warn that no amount of wealth, luxury, or technological sophistication can keep criminals safe from justice.
