Qantas faces backlash over customer data on the dark web | The Business | ABC NEWS
The personal data of 5.7 million Qantas customers, including frequent flyer numbers, names and email addresses was stolen in July. Some of the customers had phone numbers, birth dates and addresses also stolen. Cyber criminals tricked an airline call centre worker in the Philippines into handing over access to the information on third party platform, Salesforce. The airline is one of 40 global firms linked to Salesforce that was targeted by a cyber crime group. Hackers say they posted the data on the dark web after its ransom demand was not met. Experts say with the airline recently reporting a $1.6 billion full-year profit, the size of any penalty must be big enough to teach Qantas and other companies a lesson. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner would not comment on whether Qantas would be fined over the data hack. Cyber security expert Matt Warren from RMIT University, says the case against the airline could be complex if it tried to blame Salesforce because the crime was committed in the Philippines and not in Australia. Cyber security minister, Tony Burke said the fact that Qantas had outsourced this function to another company does not mean that they had outsourced their obligations. Qantas hasn’t fronted the cameras since the hackers released the data, saying it’s still investigating what’s on the dark web.
