Chilling details in Australian surfers’ Mexico murder case

Three men have been found guilty of murdering Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend during a surfing trip in Mexico in 2024.

Jake and Callum, aged 30 and 33 respectively, and their friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, were shot dead in Baja California state, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in a suspected robbery.

Their deaths sparked an outpouring of grief and condemnation in Australia and the United States.

The trio were camping in a remote beachside area near the coastal city of Ensenada when they were attacked on April 27, 2024.

Their bodies were found days later, dumped in a cliff-top shaft, with gunshot wounds to their heads.

The judge ruled that the three Mexican defendants acted with premeditation. The Robinsons’ parents traveled from Australia for the month-long trial. Debra Robinson burst into tears when the guilty verdict was pronounced. The defendants have yet to be sentenced.

The prosecution requested 210 years imprisonment for each of the accused, though the maximum sentence in Baja California is 60 years.

The girlfriend of the main defendant was sentenced in November to two decades in prison after admitting that she instigated the robbery in order to steal the pickup’s tires.

This is the full story behind where and how the murders unfolded, and the families’ two-year wait for justice.
