A terrifying 4-foot wall of chocolate-brown water unleashed catastrophic destruction across Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday, August 29, 2026, after intense monsoonal storms dumped up to an inch of rain in just 30 minutes. The sudden deluge rushed 6,000 feet down Bright Angel Creek, wiping out nearly all footbridges, destroying trail corridors, and leaving at least 15 to 20 hikers missing or unaccounted for. Eyewitnesses described waterfalls appearing out of nowhere and debris flows washing away entire structures, forcing hikers to flee into cacti patches on higher ground. National Park Service and Arizona Department of Public Safety crews launched a massive airlift operation, safely evacuating over 60 stranded visitors from Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground. Authorities have closed the North Kaibab Trail, Phantom Ranch, and Colorado River traffic until further notice.
