9/11 as it happened: news reporter’s stories from Ground Zero | The Backstory | 9 News Australia
“I still believe to this day that bin Laden and all his followers would have had no idea of the disaster that they created.”
Former 9News US Correspondent Robert Penfold reflects on his time reporting on the immediate aftermath of the tragic September 11 terror attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City and the 20-year war that followed.
From the initial strikes on the World Trade Centre to the manhunt for Osama bin Laden and the Allied invasion of Afghanistan, look back at how 9News reported on the day that changed the world.
In the years following the attacks, Robert Penfold travelled to Baghdad, where he reported on the US invasion and, while reporting on Australia’s military role in Iraq, along with cameraman Richard Moran, escaped injury during a mortar attack on the Australian base.
He stepped down as the US bureau chief in 2019 after 43 years with the network.
