Iran’s chief justice vows no leniency for protesters ‘supporting the enemy’

Iran’s chief justice, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, said there was no excuse for those who “come into the streets to take part in riots, lead them, support them, or assist them”, accusing Israel and the United States of backing the protests.

The unrest started after merchants in the capital, Tehran, closed their shops in response to a sharp currency crash, with the Iranian rial falling to a record low against the US dollar on 29 December.
