Meet the 10-year-old rescuer helping with Venezuela’s earthquake recovery

10-year-old Sebastián Corro joined rescue efforts in La Guaira alongside his grandfather, Cristobal, in the wake of the deadly twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela in June.

Sebastián says he’s saved two animals since volunteering, and his grandfather says the boy helps sift through the rubble and assist families affected by the earthquakes.

Sebastián’s dedication has impressed members of Mexican rescue brigade Topos Tlatelolco — an organisation that specialises in locating and recovering victims from collapsed buildings, as well as administering first aid at disaster sites globally.

Topos Tlatelolco, whose name loosely translates to Tlatelolco Moles, has given Sebastian the nickname “El Topito”, or ‘little mole’, in recognition of his efforts.

Around 5,000 people have been killed as a result of the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June, according to government estimates. The US Geological Survey has predicted the final death toll could be twice as high.
