Lance Thompson, a former rugby league forward who played for the Dragons and Cronulla Sharks, died in 2018 at age 40 from diabetic ketoacidosis, a deadly complication of type 1 diabetes. His daughter Shalice found him unresponsive and is now speaking publicly during National Diabetes Week to raise awareness about the disease, which affects 2 million Australians. She urges people to take diabetes seriously and emphasises the importance of proper management, including insulin pumps, which her father wished he had used.
