Trump threatens to strike Iranian power plants unless ‘they get to the table and negotiate’

US President Donald Trump has threatened to widen US strikes happening across Iran to include power plants and bridges unless Iran returns to the negotiating table.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Iran “better make a deal”, or it won’t have “anyone left”, adding: “We’re being very careful with the civilian population, as you know, but I said, ‘You better make a deal, or you’re not going to have anything left.’”

Deliberately attacking essential civilian infrastructure is a war crime under international law.

The two countries have resumed fighting with strikes on targets across the region, less than a month after they signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war in the Middle East.

Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the renewed US blockade “has, in a way, dismantled the Islamabad memorandum”, referring to the interim deal reached last month.

Despite renewed hostilities, mediated talks between the two sides have not formally ended.
