‘Immeasurable loss’: Tributes pour in for Sam Neill
Tributes to Sam Neill have been paid from around the world after the actor’s family announced his death at 78 on Monday.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the New Zealander had “earned a special place in Australian hearts”.
“Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance,” he said.
“He will be much mourned and long remembered. May he rest in peace.”
Australian actor Magda Szubanski commented on social media that she feels “absolutely devastated” by Neill’s passing.
Szubanski, herself in remission for stage-three blood cancer, wrote: “I’m in complete shock. Last time we spoke he was going so well.
“My heart goes out to his family and all who love him – and there are so many of us. Vale my darling friend.”
Neill’s career spanned five decades and included performances in The Piano, Thor: Love and Thunder, The Dish and Peter Rabbit.
He was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park movies.
In 2022, he was knighted Sir Sam Neill.
