ASIO chief admits terror downgraded before Bondi massacre | 7NEWS
ASIO Director Mike Burgess testified at the Royal Commission into Anti-Semitism, revealing the agency had shifted resources away from counter-terrorism to focus on espionage and foreign interference before the Bondi massacre that killed 15 people, most of them Jewish Australians. The commission heard new details about the attack, including that 11 people were shot in the first 29 seconds, and that no intelligence or police agency had prior knowledge of the planned assault. ASIO’s budget grew 37% in the five years before Bondi, but funding for anti-terror policing had fallen significantly during that period.
