Avalon Airport terminal evacuated and suspect detained after bomb scare | 9 News Australia
In this breaking news update out of Victoria, Australia, Avalon Airport has been plunged into an emergency lockdown following a serious bomb scare. The domestic terminal was entirely evacuated early this morning after a suspicious package was flagged by security personnel during the routine passenger screening process.
Victoria Police emergency services swarmed the airport premises, located southwest of Melbourne near Geelong, shortly before 6:00 am on 21 May. Members of the highly specialized Victoria Police Bomb Response Unit were called to the scene to safely evaluate and clear the threat. Eye-witnesses and aerial footage captured the dramatic moments as two tactical bomb robots were deployed, maneuvering directly into the front check-in entrance of the terminal.
The security incident has triggered immense logistical disruptions. Passengers arriving on an international flight from Bali were escorted under guard into a secure holding pen within the car park, while travelers scheduled for an early morning domestic flight to Brisbane were refused entry to the building entirely. Victoria Police have officially confirmed that the building remains cordoned off as a safety check precaution, but crucially, one individual has already been detained and taken into custody in connection with the scare.
