King’s Cross in Sydney was undergoing major urban transformation in the early 1970s with two significant infrastructure projects: the Eastern Suburbs Railway being constructed beneath the surface, and the King’s Cross Road Tunnel designed to carry four lanes of traffic under the Cross. These developments are demolishing historic terrace houses and reshaping the character of this colourful area, which evolved from Darlinghurst Hill’s windmill-dominated landscape 130 years ago through Queen’s Cross in the Victorian era to become the iconic King’s Cross neighbourhood.
