Melbourne-based artist Richard Lewer has won the Archibald Prize on his sixth attempt with a life-size portrait of Indigenous artist Illuwanti Ken, painted against an ochre background representing her barren country. The 2024 competition featured 58 finalists, including portraits of well-known celebrities, champions, and the Zimmermann sisters in hyper-realistic style. The exhibition opens at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, with the final selection made by 11 judges whose deliberations remain private.
