A renowned expert has revealed the hantavirus could mutate following a devastating and deadly cruise ship outbreak.
A hantavirus expert has issued a stark warning after three people died in a World Health Organisation-confirmed outbreak on a cruise ship.
A Dutch couple and a German woman are dead while two others are suspected to have contracted the fatal virus following an outbreak on the MV Hondius in April.
The Dutch-flagged ship is now heading to Spain’s Canary Islands after being refused entry into Cape Verde.
The University of Newcastle’s Dr Craig Dalton, who discovered a new strain of the hantavirus in the US in 1993, warned the current one virus on MV Hondius could mutate.
Speaking of the 1993 strain, he told news.com.au: “It is a nasty bug. It can cause a very rapid deterioration and death. When investigating the first outbreak, there’d be people that were dancing in the evening and dead early in the morning, overnight.
“They deteriorate very rapidly. We had people going to the funeral of their spouse and collapsing on the way to the funeral and then being rushed direct to intensive care. So it can be a really nasty bug.”
He said the strain, at the time unknown, wreaked fear in the local community.
“We didn’t know what was causing it. One of the earliest cases was a runner. And we were wondering whether it might have been some kind of spore in the desert, dust, and people were worried about going running and kicking up dust even,” he said.
