More than 1.6 million Australians at risk of mortgage stress | The Business | ABC NEWS

The latest rate hike takes the cash rate back to where it was at the start of 2025. If it’s increased again to 4.6 per cent – the highest level in close to 15 years – a homeowner with a $750,000 mortgage, will be paying $455 more a month than they were when the RBA began lifting rates in February. Economists predict at least one more rate rise is on the way in 2026 and also fear a prolonged war in the Middle East has increased the chance of a recession. Borrowers say they are struggling to pay their home loan, the bills and fear more bad news on rates is on the way. They want the Reserve Bank to stop and think about how rate rises are hurting Australians and tipping more people into mortgage stress. Data from Roy Morgan shows more than 1.6 million Australians are now at risk of mortgage stress.
