Dashcam captures moment plane strikes truck on New Jersey highway

A United Airlines Boeing 767 struck a light pole and a truck while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Sunday. Flight 169 had departed Venice, Italy, and was on final approach when the incident occurred at around 1:50pm local time. The aircraft was travelling at more than 257 kilometres per hour as it crossed over the New Jersey Turnpike, just outside the airport. Landing gear tyres and the underside of the plane struck a light pole and a tractor-trailer. The pole then struck a Jeep, according to New Jersey State Police. Dashcam footage from inside the truck captured the moment the landing gear made contact, shaking the cabin and sending glass flying. The truck’s driver, Warren Boardley, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released. He had been heading to an airport depot to deliver bread products when the collision occurred. No passengers or crew on the aircraft were injured. The plane landed safely, taxied to the gate, and pilots and air traffic control did not appear to be aware of the collision at the time. Air traffic controllers reported a hole in the side of the aircraft approximately 30 minutes after landing. United Airlines has since removed the crew from service and launched a safety investigation. The airline said its maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft.
