Shooting near White House as Secret Service engages juvenile suspect

A juvenile was shot by the U.S. Secret Service near the White House in Washington on Monday after opening fire at officers. The suspect briefly fled on foot after being approached, then fired at officers. Uniformed Secret Service police returned fire and shot the suspect. A weapon was recovered at the scene. The White House was briefly placed on lockdown. Journalists at an event on the White House lawn were moved to the briefing room. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn confirmed the suspect was a juvenile but did not disclose their condition. Quinn said it was not yet known whether the incident was directed at the President. DC Police declared the scene secure and closed nearby roads, warning the public to avoid the area for several hours. The incident follows heightened security in the capital after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner late last month, for which a suspect has been arrested.
